I have heard that:

T�i nghe như vầy:

on one occasion the Blessed One was staying in Rajagaha, at Jivaka's Mango Grove. Then Jivaka Komarabhacca went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down, sat to one side. As he was sitting there he said to the Blessed One:

Một thời, Thế T�n tr� ở R�jagaha (Vương x�), tại rừng xo�i J�vaka. Rồi J�vaka Kom�rabhacca đi đến Thế T�n, sau khi đến, đảnh lễ Thế T�n rồi ngồi xuống một b�n. Ngồi xuống một b�n, J�vaka Kom�rabhacca bạch Thế T�n :

-"Lord, to what extent is one a lay follower?"

-"Bạch Thế T�n, cho đến như thế n�o l� người nam cư sĩ ?"

-"Jivaka, when one has gone to the Buddha for refuge, has gone to the Dhamma for refuge, and has gone to the Sangha for refuge, then to that extent is one a lay follower."

-"N�y Jivaka, khi n�o quy y Phật, quy y Ph�p, quy y ch�ng Tăng, cho đến như vậy l� người nam cư sĩ."

-"And to what extent, lord, is one a virtuous lay follower?"

-"Cho đến như thế n�o, bạch Thế T�n, l� người nam cư sĩ giữ giới ?"

Jivaka, when one abstains from taking life, from stealing, from sexual misconduct, from lying, and from fermented & distilled drinks that lead to heedlessness, then to that extent is one a virtuous lay follower."

N�y, Jivaka, khi n�o người nam cư sĩ từ bỏ s�t sanh, từ bỏ lấy của kh�ng cho, từ bỏ t� hạnh trong c�c dục, từ bỏ n�i l�o, từ bỏ đắm say rượu men, rượu nấu, cho đến như vậy, l� người nam cư sĩ giữ giới.

"And to what extent, lord, is one a lay follower who practices for his own benefit but not that of others?"

Cho đến như thế n�o, bạch Thế T�n, l� người nam cư sĩ thực h�nh, v� tư lợi chứ kh�ng v� lợi tha ?

Jivaka, when a lay follower himself is consummate in conviction but does not encourage others in the consummation of conviction.

N�y Jivaka, khi n�o nam cư sĩ th�nh tựu l�ng tin cho m�nh, kh�ng c� kh�ch lệ người kh�c th�nh tựu l�ng tin.

When he himself is consummate in virtue but does not encourage others in the consummation of virtue.

Th�nh tựu giữ giới cho m�nh, kh�ng kh�ch lệ người kh�c th�nh tựu giữ giới.

When he himself is consummate in generosity but does not encourage others in the consummation of generosity

Th�nh tựu bố th� cho m�nh ; kh�ng kh�ch lệ người kh�c th�nh tựu bố th�.

When he himself desires to see the monks but does not encourage others to see the monks.

Muốn tự m�nh đi đến yết kiến c�c Tỷ-kheo ; kh�ng kh�ch lệ người kh�c đi đến yết kiến c�c Tỷ-kheo.

When he himself wants to hear the true Dhamma but does not encourage others to hear the true Dhamma.

Chỉ tự m�nh muốn nghe diệu ph�p, kh�ng kh�ch lệ người kh�c nghe diệu ph�p.

When he himself habitually remembers the Dhamma he has heard but does not encourage others to remember the Dhamma they have heard.

Tự m�nh thọ tr� những ph�p đ� được nghe ; kh�ng kh�ch lệ người kh�c thọ tr� những ph�p đ� được nghe

When he himself explores the meaning of the Dhamma he has heard but does not encourage others to explore the meaning of the Dhamma they have heard.

Tự m�nh suy nghĩ đến � nghĩa c�c ph�p đ� thọ tr� ; kh�ng kh�ch lệ người kh�c suy nghĩ đến � nghĩa c�c ph�p đ� thọ tr�

When he himself, knowing both the Dhamma & its meaning, practices the Dhamma in line with the Dhamma, but does not encourage others to practice the Dhamma in line with the Dhamma.

Sau khi tự m�nh biết nghĩa, biết ph�p, thực hiện t�y ph�p, đ�ng Ch�nh ph�p, kh�ng kh�ch lệ người kh�c biết nghĩa, biết ph�p, thực hiện t�y ph�p, đ�ng Ch�nh ph�p.

Then to that extent he is a lay follower who practices for his own benefit but not for the benefit of others."

Cho đến như vậy, n�y Jivaka, l� nam cư sĩ thực h�nh v� tự lợi, kh�ng phải v� lợi tha.

"And to what extent, lord, is one a lay follower who practices both for his own benefit & the benefit of others?"

Cho đến như thế n�o, bạch Thế T�n, l� nam cư sĩ thực h�nh vừa tự lợi, vừa lợi tha ?

Jivaka, when a lay follower himself is consummate in conviction and encourages others in the consummation of conviction; when he himself is consummate in virtue and encourages others in the consummation of virtue; when he himself is consummate in generosity and encourages others in the consummation of generosity; when he himself desires to see the monks and encourages others to see the monks; when he himself wants to hear the true Dhamma and encourages others to hear the true Dhamma; when he himself habitually remembers the Dhamma he has heard and encourages others to remember the Dhamma they have heard; when he himself explores the meaning of the Dhamma he has heard and encourages others to explore the meaning of the Dhamma they have heard; when he himself, knowing both the Dhamma & its meaning, practices the Dhamma in line with the Dhamma and encourages others to practice the Dhamma in line with the Dhamma: then to that extent he is a lay follower who practices both for his own benefit and for the benefit of others."

N�y Jivaka, khi n�o nam cư sĩ tự m�nh th�nh tựu l�ng tin v� kh�ch lệ người kh�c th�nh tựu l�ng tin ; khi n�o tự m�nh giữ giới v� kh�ch lệ người kh�c giữ giới ; khi n�o tự m�nh bố th� v� kh�ch lệ người kh�c bố th� ; khi n�o tự m�nh muốn đi đến yết kiến c�c Tỷ-kheo v� kh�ch lệ người kh�c đi đến yết kiến c�c Tỷ-kheo ; khi n�o tự m�nh muốn nghe diệu ph�p v� kh�ch lệ người kh�c nghe diệu ph�p ; khi n�o tự m�nh tr� những ph�p đ� được nghe v� kh�ch lệ người kh�c thọ tr� những ph�p đ� được nghe ; khi n�o tự m�nh suy nghĩ đến � nghĩa c�c ph�p đ� thọ tr� v� kh�ch lệ người kh�c suy nghĩ đế � nghĩa c�c ph�p đ� thọ tr� ; sau khi tự m�nh biết nghĩa, biết ph�p, thực hiện ph�p đ�ng Ch�nh ph�p, kh�ch lệ người kh�c sau khi biết nghĩa biết ph�p, thực hiện ph�p đ�ng Ch�nh ph�p. Cho đến như vậy, n�y Jivaka, l� nam cư sĩ thực h�nh v� tự lợi v� lợi tha.
